I plan to buy a small Datavideo mixer to give more capacity for live streamed programmes soon, but in the meantime wonder if I can play video from my laptop into the HDMI input, and cut away to the presenter via the webcam input. Is this possible and practical, please?
It is certainly possible to capture the HDMI output from the laptop to Webcaster X2. You can utilize the shortcut keys on a keyboard to switch between HDMI and Webcam sources.

Yep, just make sure your laptop’s HDMI video output is set to 1080p or 720p.
You can also try to use small android stick - it is way cheaper and energy efficient than a laptop. For instance a H96 Pro Plus.
