Hey there!

We used a ZTE Warp hotspot that I got from Calyx - https://www.calyxinstitute.org

Calyx gives you a hotspot + a year of truly unlimited service if you contribute $500. It runs on the Sprint network. This is by far the best deal in hotspots although it seems like the ZTE Warp has been replaced with some other hardware now. As you may know, ZTE is currently sanctioned by the US government so Iā€™m not sure that their hardware is still being sold.

From there, once you have a hotspot, you can either share the WiFi off the hotspot or use USB connection to connect it to a small router that translates that into Ethernet so you can have a fully wired connection.

Sprint and other providers have what is called LTE+/LTA-A. This is a technology that allows hotspots and phones to establish data connections over multiple bands simultaneously, giving you more bandwidth and a very high level of reliability. You can read more about the tech here: http://www.3gpp.org/technologies/keywords-acronyms/101-carrier-aggregation-explained or https://www.qualcomm.com/invention/technologies/lte/lte-carrier-aggregation

When it comes to choosing a hotspot, make sure it (and your provider) have LTE-A or LTE+ (also called carrier aggregation) support in your region. Then, choose one that has external antenna ports (very useful indoors) and preferably USB tethering support as well.

Here is a quick diagram that explains the tech. Essentially, your phone or hotspot create multiple connections:
